Punishment and Self-Persuasion in Adam and Eve Essay

Using Punishment and Self-Persuasion to Explain Adam and Eve The Book of Genesis tells the story of how God created man and woman. He permitted Adam and Eve to eat from any tree in his garden except the Tree of Knowledge, and they faced death if they did. They were handed out a severe threat; that of death. As we all know, Adam and Eve did eat from the tree of knowledge and were banished from the Garden of Eden. Looking at the situation from a social psychology perspective, I will examine why that was the case, and what God could have theoretically done to be obeyed. In other words, I will discuss why a mild threat might have worked better in this case. What is forbidden is desired. This age-old adage is the source of Adam and Eve’s†¦show more content†¦They have some sort of justification but not complete enough to explain why they haven’t tasted the forbidden fruit yet. Their answer does not serve to reduce dissonance like in the other case, so they look for other means to give grounds for their lack of action. One way to reduce their dissonance is to convince themselves that they don’t really want to eat the fruit. To complete their internal justification, Adam and Eve might expand on that and decide that the fruit is not that tasty. They might make up excuses such as â€Å"it doesn’t look great, so it must taste bad† or something along those lines. The kind of punishment God chooses to hand out starts a chain of events: The harsher the threat, the more external justification there is, the less the need for internal justification. On the other hand, the milder the punishment, the less external justification there is, the more the need for external justification. Does this theory hold up in controlled experiments? Elliot Aronson and J. Merrill Carlsmith (1963) concluded that â€Å"parents who use punishment to encourage their children to adopt desirable values should keep the punishment mild† (Aronson, Wilson, Akert 2009, p.165) when they tested a situation similar to this one (their forbidden toy experiment). Question: Describe about the Business Research for Corporate Cash Reserve. Answer: Part A This project sets out to provide a presentation of a report on the effects of annual leave on the business. It also presents an overall effect of the annual leave on the cash flow of the business. Under ordinary circumstances, an employer can accord his or her employee's annual leave in two likely events: that is, when the employee shave had an accumulation of excess annual leave and when the business is seeking to close down due to such periods as Christmas and New Year eve. This is well documented in the registered award agreements. From a legal point of view, one is allowed to take up to four weeks of paid annual leave. This is after one has worked for the company for a continuous period of up to a year without taking a break. For instance, if an individual works for say, five hours in every seven days, then this means that they can take up to four weeks that is the equivalent of one annual leave. That is 20 hours in total. It is important for both the employers and the employees to take note of the fact that an individual has his or her annual leave hours carried forward to the next year in the event that they do not use them up. This gives room for the individual employees to take up two of their annual leaves for weeks in a continuous manner if the individual so deems the arrangement fit. It is also important to note that these provisions are just but provided for by the minimum legal provisions, but more space is provided for by the employment agreement that is specifically tied to a given company policy. They could be more. As a matter of fact, one's employer can offer pay what is known a pay as you go kind of leave. This kind of arrangement should only be used in such instances as to when one is a casual laborer or employee and as such, their unpredictable working conditions makes it almost impracticable to have paid holidays. There are other instances when the individual is on a fixed arrangement of employment terms for a period less than 12 months. This applies to such cases as when one is employed to work at a concert or where there are events marking a night presentation or a two-day conference. This means that the employee under such an arrangement can go up to months before hearing from their employer as these events do not happen on a daily basis, but only when they are organized. There are instances when the employee can request to be paid off their leave in cash, as opposed to being granted days off. That can be achieved through a communication between the employee and the employer. In the event that the matter does not work, or the employer feels that the amount provided is not sufficient, then there comes a sufficient ground for the aggrieved to table their grievances in the Employment Relations Authority. However, there are companies that do not provide for the payment of the annual leave in cash. This is a matter that must be determined by the respective companies as it is their policies that support or discredits the same and every company has its own policy regarding annual leave. Part B: Possible impacts on the cash flow of the business if too many staff have accrued high levels of annual leave. Cash flow is a very integral component of the business finances. This is a fact that is actually seen to be the lifeblood of the business. This is a very important consideration as it becomes very critical that one learns all the possible scenarios with regard to cash flow and the general effects of annual leave on business finances. It is very necessary for the employers or the stakeholders to understand the cash flow effects on the overall proceeds of the company, otherwise, the company can be deemed to have some kind of serious business ramifications on the business. For instance, the business may face some crippling effects such as finding it hard to pay the bills of the company. Much as it is important for the business to have a well-defined cash flow, sometimes it is very necessary for the stakeholders to have an understanding of the impacts of employee leave on the overall cash flow within a given company. One of the major problems companies face is what employees accrue in excesses of amounts that come from the annual leave. This means that it becomes very tricky for the company to cope with the absence of the employees from work in the name of being on leave. It is a matter of fact that with the absence of many workers from work, the productivity of the company becomes reduced and this will have a direct bearing on the general cash flow within the company. It should also be noted that the absent employees attract the same amount of payment in dues as those on duty and with reduced production, it is automatic that the company will spend more than it produces in terms of cash. This will definitely bear a great effect on the cash flow of the company. Whenever the employees opt for cashed leave and the individuals resort to accruing the same, this might have a net effect on the overall cash flow of the company. In actuality, the employees may end up having huge cash net hanging over their heads. If the employees are given so much time on their annual leaves, then the business can face some backlog in terms of production and this can have an overall effect on the performance of the company. (WuDunn ,Kristoff, 2009, Half the Sky) Virginity is one of the most prized possessions a female can have. Its literally a matter of life and death in the Muslim world. Under Sharia law, If a woman is raped and there's loss of virginity the female can actually be charged with adultery and stoned to death. Take the case of 14 year old Hena Begum from Bangladesh India. One day her 14 year old cousin brutally raped her. After her rape, her rapist and his family beat her until she was unconscious. The local Sharia courts ruled that Hena committed adultery - for the crime of being a child raped by an adult. She was to receive 101 lashes. She could still not stand on her own when the Muslim clerics took her to the public square and proceeded to lash her. 80 lashes in she collapsed. Her parents were allowed to take her to the hospital, where she later died. Her father was ordered to pay $700.00 (US). Completely outrageous in such a poor country. The rapist had been charged with rape before and was forced to marry his victim. She coincidently was one of the people who initially helped beat Hena.(fortliberty.org,2014) It's hard for us in the USA to understand crimes and punishments such as these. To help us better understand we first need to really delve into the world of Sharia/Islamic Law. This is a system set forth 14+ centuries ago. Sharia law is considered the infallible law of God/Allah. Sharia law deals with many different things including politics, economics, crime, moral codes, and marital codes. One main thing to know is that women are completely oppressed and uneducated in regards to Sharia law. Amnesty International has found that 1 in 5 women will be a victim of rape in her lifetime. They also found that women are more likely to be beaten, raped, or killed by a current partner than by any other person. Studies estimate that 20-50 percent of women experience partner violence sometime in her lifetime. One hundred and two countries have no legal provisions against domestic violence. The UN estimates that five thousand women in the Middle East and Asia die a year as a result of honor kill ings. As of 2011 child marriages are common in the Middle East, accounting for 1 in 6 marriages in Egypt and 1 in 3 in Yemen. Rape is considered a crime in ALL Middle Eastern countries. Yet in some cases the rapist is forced to marry the rape victim. If she complains she can also be charged with rape and adultery and stoned to death.(Wikipedia, 2014) Many scholars claim that Sharia law encourages domestic violence against women, when a husband suspects Nushiz ( disobedience, disloyalty, rebellion, ill conduct) in his wife. Other scholars that is not consistent with modern perspective of the Quran. (wikipedia,2014) If we are to question why men and women in Muslim countries allow for such atrocities we will find that a huge factor is that Sharia law has done a very good job of keeping women uneducated. Men are also not very well educated. As long as you keep the masses uneducated they will follow like sheep. Then when you add in the raping, torture, stoning, cutting off of limbs. You can better grasp why Muslim's are at such a vulnerable position. Some think that Muslim men are afraid of women. Women create life. Women deal with all sorts of oppressive things and yet they march on. Sexual Slavery, Trafficking, and Prostitution The next severe form of oppression is sexual slavery, trafficking, and prostitution. In India, prostitution is legal yet there are many related activities that are not legal. Such as; soliciting in a public places, kerb crawling, owning or managing a brothel, pimping and pandering. There's an estimated 1.2 million children in prostitution in India. Some as young as 6. (UN.org,2013) Indian migrants
